The Storm

This project required me to pick a certain song or album and create an illustration inspired by it. So I pretended that "Der Sturm" by Schwarzer Engel was a single and designed a record sleeve for it. My goal was to communicate its solemn atmosphere and portray man's vulnerability to the forces of nature.
To some extent, this project was inspired by my childhood memories of the Baltic Sea and its cold, unforgiving beauty. When I listen to "Der Sturm," I imagine a raging sea storm, even though there is no mention of water in the lyrics.
Ever since I was a child, I felt profound existential dread when gazing over the endless murky waters. The sea makes me feel fragile and insignificant, just like the protagonist of this song.
Essentially, this piece is a layered paper sculpture. Or maybe a collage, if you will. I made it using a variety of materials, ranging from balsa wood to foam board.

Although initially I was planning to make just a couple of marker drawings instead of working with paper, I still managed to make use of this sketch. As you might have guessed, I used it as a reference for my collage.
